Ton Kreukels is, having retired October 2006, Honorary Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, Utrecht University.
He was, besides his chair at Utrecht University, a member of the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy, coordinating study and advice on the urban regions of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, from an economic, social and administrative perspective and advisor of the Netherlands Association of Provinces for future oriented and pro-active regional and spatial policies.
In 1996 and in 2001 he was a research fellow and visiting professor in Japan. From 1996 onwards he has been engaged in a comparative study on infrastructure and urban policies between Asia and Europe.
In 1998 he was involved as reporter of the OECD evaluation of federal urban policies of Germany. Between 1998 and 2002 he coordinated an international comparative research on land use and land use planning from the perspective of mixed and intensive land use and management growth of urban regions in Western Europe, U.S.A. and East Asian countries (Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong).
Between 2002 and now his focus has been on a theoretical research programme on land use and land use planning using a behavioural and institutional approach.
