The Aker river is Oslos main river running some 10 km from the Lake of Maridalen (altitude 150 m) to the Oslofjord in the city centre. The Aker river was for a long time the centre of modern, industrial Oslo, utilizing the river for power supply (mills, sawmills, textile industry, etc). By 1970 these industries were in decline and the whole area was run down and suffered pollution problems.
