The Finger Plan was worked out in the late 1940ies. It’s a comprehensive plan guiding urban growth, infrastucture and green areas. The plan recommended that Copenhagen's suburbs should be developed as small independent urban communities connected to the city by radial railway lines and roads. Urban growth should be concentrated in "urban fingers" that grew outwards from the existing city. Between the fingers "green wedges" should be protected agains urban growth, so that green areas always are accessible to the citizens independent of where you live.
