Stockholm MILUnet Workshop Kista
9-11 June 2004 Stockholm - Sweden

The main problems to address at the Workshop in Stockholm are as follows:

A. Local case: What makes it a place?

  • How can we create an attractive central place and make this place distinct, so that it becomes a positive part of the public consciousness of Kista?
  • Can a future “central district” be defined and developed in order to improve urban qualities and functions in Kista?

Stockholm, Social values in urban green areas

the green wedges of the Stockholm Region

When planning the future development of the Stockholm region, it is important to recognise the many different values of the green areas in order to be able make to changes in a sustainable way. In several publications the Office of Regional Planning and Urban Transportation has taken up various aspects of the features that are important to observe from a planning perspective. A report from 1985, “En skogsbacke i Handen” emphasized the interaction between built-up and recreational areas. “Gröna bältet” (The green belt) from 1990 stressed the...

Northern Station and Karolinska University Hospital area. Northern Station in Stockholm is an old freight station, which is not in use since a number of years. Still a railway track is in use for freight trains to the port of Värtan. Close to the station there is a motorway, E4. The station area, the railway line and the motorway have for may years been a barrier, dividing the inner city of Stockholm from the Karolinska Hospital University area in the neighbouring city of Solna. The unique position close to Karolinska University hospital and also to the Royal Technical University KTH makes the area suitable for world-class research laboratories but also housing, offices, hotels...

The City of Stockholm promotes new housing in the inner city. To achieve this objective several ways of MILU use have been tried. New houising has been built on top of motorways, railways and on the roof of existing office buildings. Around 1,000 new dwellings were planned and built within the CBD area during 1998-2002. One picture show an example of dwellings on top of a department store. Other examples were parking houses completely or partly replaces with housing.

Another example is Söderleden in the middle of Södermalm, where office and housing blocks have been built 1985-2000 over a motorway, that earlier formed a deep ditch that divided the city in...

Hammarby Sea City was a port and industrial area on both sides of the Hammarby Lake close to Södermalm in the inner city of Stockholm. The distance to the city center is approximately 3 km. The first parts were developed with housing during the eighties. A planning process for the rest of the area started round 1990 and has been carried through in co-operation between the Cities of Stockholm and Nacka and the County Council of Stockholm. A new light rail line will connect the area with the rest of the public transport network to the old suburban line to Saltsjöbaden which will be upgraded to the same standard with a junction node in the area.

Around 6 000 housing...
